Morph It!

Description

‘Morph It!’ is an educational digital game to teach its players about colors and shapes. Each time two shapes get combined the color and form of the shapes gets morphed into a new shape having a new color. Players are supposed to combine different shapes and achieve as many goal shapes as possible within the limited time.

Players also get the option to reload the shapes appearing on the screen if they consume the shapes and it appears none of them could result in the goal shape. And finally, they also get a help button to pause the game and see how colors and shape combine.

Creative Vision

The decision to make a game was a default for me since I aspire to build a career within the ‘play’ industry. And the idea to make a shape and color based game initially came to mee in our very first class when we were learning how to draw basic vector shapes. As an exploration I was trying to draw the mastercard logo in that class by combining two circles and merging their colors. I could not achieve it back then but the idea had been haunting me ever since.

As designers and artists, we are expected to have a solid understanding of shapes and colors, but during a lecture on images in our STEM for Creatives class I realized that most of us in the class (including me) actually did not understand the basics of color mixing very well. That observation further reinforced for me the need for such a game that will help educate designers and artists about colors in a playful manner.

Our lectures in particles/class objects and polar coordinates/ Johan Gielis’s Superformula strengthened the idea and gave it legs.

Some inspiration also came from our STEM for Creatives lectures in designing quantified research experiments. The hope was that I could do a before and after knowledge test (of colors and shapes) of players and see how their knowledge improved as a result of playing the game.

The shapes in the game are constantly moving around the screen, this decision was made to add an extra bit of challenge and dexterical fun to the game.

Originally the plan was to have four goal shapes appear on the screen and for the players to collect all four within the time frame. But this made the lifetime gameplay finite since players would move on from the game once they are able to collect all four within the time limit. This was later changed to showing only one goal at a time and for players to be able to gather as many goals within the timeframe so the lifetime play becomes infinite and players always have a reason to come back to the game and improve their high scores.
